After Nissan pioneered the first commercially available electric car with the Leaf, the company is now revealing its first 100% electric SUV: the 2022 Ariya.
Find out more about the mechanical options, cutting-edge styling and interior, and new safety features of this electric vehicle.
Two Choices of Cog, Two Choices of Batteries
Nissan's new SUV doesn't just have an electric drivetrain; it offers the driver the choice of one or two motors. In the first case, you get a front-wheel-drive vehicle; in the second, you add a motor to the rear to give it all-wheel drive.
That's when you discover Nissan's new all-wheel drive system: e-4ORCE. This system not only ensures better traction, it also optimizes torque distribution and controls braking at each wheel.
Of course, the presence of two engines also means more power: the Nissan Ariya can develop up to 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. This means you can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds.
As for the autonomy, it varies according to the version and the battery chosen. You can choose between a 65-kWh battery (63 usable) or a 90 kWh battery (87 usable). Compare the versions according to Nissan Ariya Canada data:
Cogwheel Version Autonomy Power
- Front-wheel drive : Engage / 346 km / 214 hp
- Front-wheel drive : Venture + / 482 km / 238 hp
- Front-wheel drive : Evolve+ / 458 km / 238 hp
- e-4ORCE all-wheel drive : Evolve / 330 km / 335 hp
- e-4ORCE all-wheel drive : Platine+ / 426 km / 389 hp
- e-4ORCE all-wheel drive : Premiere / 426 km / 389 hp
Optimized by regenerative braking, the range can therefore reach high figures, mostly above the 400 km mark. According to William Clavey, journalist for RPM:
"The Ariya will help Nissan come back strong in electrification."
A Style That Stands Out
The new Ariya represents the new visual signature of the brand with a design that contrasts with the other models in the range. More fluid lines, rounder shapes and a more modern look set it apart. Among other things, it is worth noting:
- A new illuminated emblem
- A revamped, sleek V-shaped grille
- A sporty rear spoiler
- Coupe roofline
- Distinctive wheels
Antennas on the roof perform a new function: they automatically update the navigation maps. Also note the increased wheel spacing, pushed to the front and rear extremes. In addition to appearance, this feature allows for even more space in the cabin.
A High-Tech Interior
Even more innovative than the electric vehicle's exterior, the Ariya's interior is cutting-edge. The infotainment system and instrumentation consist of two 12.3-inch screens connected as a single unit.
While this has been seen before, Nissan brings an innovation to the table: the ability to transpose information from one screen to the other according to your preferences. Classic Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and now Amazon Alexa is added. Note in passing that all on-board controls are now touch-sensitive.
The new Remote Software Upgrade also allows the automaker to update and upgrade the car's software remotely, including:
- Air conditioning
- The multimedia system
- The autonomy
- The handling
In other words, Nissan is doing more than just offering an electric SUV: it's offering a new vehicle that's forward thinking in every way.
Semi-Autonomous Driving with ProPilot 2.0
There are many safety technologies in modern cars, but few go as far as ProPilot Assist 2.0. This next generation system enhances autonomous driving and even lets you take your hands off the wheel on the highway and in certain curves. The ProPilot Park also offers an autonomous parking mode: you only have to press a button!
